In order for these to represent a robust foundation in the long term, international norms and standards of the power engineering industry must be met. Ginzinger electronic systems is now a member of the DLMS User Association. Their specifications are accepted worldwide when it comes to exchanging data, as well as ensuring interoperability, efficiency and safety in power engineering.
What is DLMS?
The DLMS User Association (DLMS = device language message specification) is a non-profit organization. It develops, maintains, supports and promotes the DLMS/COSEM specification for data exchange between smart devices in the field of electricity, gas, heat and water infrastructures, for example at network operators.
Members of DLMS/COSEM use these specifications in the areas of IoT, smart metering, e-mobility and smart grid to enable interoperable, resilient and secure data operations.
The organization provides data exchange definitions to support many communication technologies, including NB-IoT, 4G, 6LoWPAN, WiSUN, LoRaWAN, Zigbee LPR, and Power Line Carrier (Prime and G3).
International base standards from IEC, ISO, CEN, CENELEC, ETSI, IEEE, ANSI and others, underlie the specifications. The organization also provides training, development, compliance certification, specifications and technical literature.
A global standard for the energy sector
DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056, EN13757-1) is the global standard for intelligent energy and water management, advanced control, and innovative metering. It specifies an object-oriented data model, an application layer protocol and media-specific communication profiles.
DLMS/COSEM can be used for all utilities and energy types, all market segments, all applications, and over virtually any communication medium.
In this context, DLMS/COSEM essentially consists of three main components:
COSEM - Companion Specification for Energy Metering - the object model that can be used to describe virtually any application;
OBIS - Object Identification System - a naming system for the objects and
DLMS - Device Language Message Specification - an application layer protocol that translates the information contained in the objects into messages.
Transmission and specification
Application messages can be transported/transmitted over any number of communication media, such as for local connections, PSTN/GSM with HDLC data link layer RS232 / RS485; GPRS; Wi-SUN, LoRAWAN, wired and wireless M-Bus, etc....
The DLMS/COSEM specification is developed and maintained by the DLMS User Association and is internationally standardized by IEC TC13 WG14 and CEN TC294.
DLMS UA was founded in 1997 by leading utilities and meter manufacturers and has grown into a global organization with over 300 members from all continents and over 70 countries. They include utilities, distribution system operators (DSOs), equipment manufacturers, system developers and integrators, software platforms for DSOs, semiconductor manufacturers, and e-vehicle charging infrastructure manufacturers.
