TSN with Linux in practice – real-time Ethernet in 10 steps
Practical developer webinar on TSN with Linux: deterministic Ethernet communication, guaranteed latencies, and precise time synchronization based on open standards.
Real-time capability via Ethernet is a key requirement for modern industrial, automation, and embedded-systems. Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) extends classic Ethernet with guaranteed latencies, deterministic behavior, and precise time synchronization.
In this webinar, our speaker will demonstrate in a practical way how real-time Ethernet and TSN can be implemented with Linux—based on open standards and mainline technologies.
webinar content:
The webinar provides a step-by-step guide to the most important components of a TSN-enabled Linux environment:
- Basics of real-time Ethernet and TSN
- Hardware and Linux kernel requirements (PREEMPT_RT)
- Configuration of traffic priorities and queues
- Use of Linux tools such as tc, ethtool, and linuxptp
- Time synchronization with IEEE 802.1AS (gPTP)
- System optimization for deterministic behavior
- Typical stumbling blocks, tests, and best practices from real-world experience
The focus is clearly on concrete implementation steps rather than theoretical concepts.
Your expert in the webinar:
Jan Altenberg has been working with Linux professionally for more than 20 years. He studied information technology at the University of Cooperative Education in Stuttgart. From 2002 to 2006, he supervised various projects for the EU OCEAN project, which aimed to create an open control platform based on real-time Linux. He then headed up technical sales at Linutronix GmbH and subsequently worked as an open source expert and open source compliance officer at an automotive supplier.
Since 2021, Jan Altenberg has been working as a senior consultant and embedded systems integrator for the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) eG. He is a regular speaker at various specialist conferences and has been awarded the Speaker Award Audience Award several times by visitors to the ESE Congress.
time & place:
- Wednesday, November 11, 2026
- 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Ginzinger online seminar room
target group:
The webinar is aimed at:
- Embedded and Linux developers
- System and software architects
- Automation and industrial IT experts
- Technical project managers with a focus on real-time communication
Basic knowledge of Linux and network technology is helpful, but no prior knowledge of TSN is required.
About OSADL
OSADL (Open Source Automation and Development Lab) is the leading competence network offering services for the use of open source software in industrial products. It supports the sustainable use of OSS and offers extensive knowledge and a large network of experts to support product development.
Ginzinger electronic systems has been a member of OSADL for many years, participates in conferences, and is actively involved in the further development of Linux in the industrial environment.
